Knowledge of the use the Library Media Center is one of the most important tools for students who will live most of their adult lives in the twenty-first century to acquire. Technology has changed all of our lives, and will continue to do so at an ever increasing pace. An informed citizenry must be prepared to change with the technological society in which we live.

Formal in-class education will take citizens only so far. Increasingly, students must be prepared and able to educate and inform themselves, both within the walls of the school and in the outside world. The ability to use and assess information sources is a crucial element students must possess to keep informed and to be current with the changing world, be it at home, at work, or in further educational pursuits. In addition, students must also be aware of the many recreational materials available in most libraries. These materials are intended to support the arts, hobbies, games, sports, and travel, as well as general recreational media materials, and enable the student to enhance their own personal growth. Both dimensions of the library are important, and both are needed in living a full life.

Library instruction is offered to all students K-12, for the purpose of providing them with a positive attitude toward the Library Media Center, to familiarize them with both the educational tools and recreational facilities, and to support and nurture their class based and independent needs as they change and grow through their years in the New Brunswick Pubic Schools.
